Project Working

While at college I spent a lot of time learning how to plan, manage, and deliver projects. Take a look at how it works down below.

Why Manage A Project?

Planning is important when running a project with multiple members and multiple lines of work. This is because without proper planning, tasks may be repeated unnecessarily or skipped accidentally, always taking more time and money to resolve. With appropriate planning, individual members can easily understand where they are, and where they need to be, as well as where others and the whole team are.

Why Write A Report?

Documenting work is very important to make overall progress with any project. Without documentation you are relying on the current project members remembering and holding all of the wisdom and information about the project. With concise and well written documentation, anyone can be dropped into the project and pick up where others have left off.

Downhill Racer Project

Take a look at my downhill racer project worked on during my time at college.

The Brief

Me and my two team mates were tasked with designing, manufacturing, and testing a downhill racer (aka go kart), as part of an engineering project. This meant producing time keeping documents, noting down progress, and constant collaboration.

The picture shows the visualised end product after a number of initial designs were ranked and tested for compatibility. The visualisation was produced on Solidworks and is to scale.

The Planning

Because this project involved multiple team members and components coming together into one end product, it was absolutely essential that we coordinated and managed our time wisely. One of the ways we did this was with Gantt charts, giving us a week by week breakdown of work and a great view of overall progress at the same time.

We produced our own logbooks to note personal progress, and made these readable by other team members, and held weekly meetings to keep everyone in the loop and agree our next steps.
